“SUPPING WITH SERPENTS”

Greetings fellow Water Rats and friends! This month our Feature Poet spot is filled by a fabulous double act; Melbourne poets Jenny Toune and Teri Louise Kelly are appearing as part of their Australian spoken word tour to promote their newly released “verse novel”, Shedding Skin.

Teri Louise Kelly is the author of three memoirs, one short story collection and two volumes of poetry, the latest a collaborative verse novel Shedding Sin, co-authored with her partner, her short stories and poetry have been published internationally and she has appeared at numerous festivals. She is the bass player in the grunge/punk band Alien Whore, has recorded a spoken word CD, was the subject of the ABC National radio documentary ‘ The Poet Stripped Bare’ (2012) and has had a DVD-Biopic made of her poetry appearances/philosophies – ‘TLK Punk’. She is currently working on her fourth memoir and a new collection of poetry.

Jenny Toune

Jenny Toune; Writer, performer, poet, tap dancer & wanna-be drummer, Jenny’s claim to fame was being fondled by Billy Idol whilst performing in the Australian Aria Awards. In her spare time she is an award winning Adelaide author who has been published in various literary journals and anthologies, including Award Winning Australian Writing 2011, 2012, 2013. As a performance poet Jenny has been featured at Melbourne’s Overload Poetry Festival, the Adelaide Fringe Festival, won the SA State Library Poetry Slam 2012 and was twice state finalist in the SA Poetry Slams. Her collaborative verse novel: Shedding Sin, was released in May 2013, she has just finished the final draft of a novel and a new poetry manuscript.

This months guest Master of Ceremonies is non other than the debonair Mister Cameron Logan, a former Kurilpa Cup prizewinner, KICI committee member and proud member of the League of Extraordinary Poets. His smooth oratory and polished patter will surely raise the tone of the afternoon.

As always sweet music will be provided by this months MYSTERY MUSICIAN.

Usually we pick one up off the street busking outside the chemist, but this month we see the return of one of Kurilpa’s favourite muso’s, the ever blooming earth-child, Ms Tania Tulip. Welcome back Tania!

Don’t forget to bring your own poems, raves, rants or stories for our famous OPEN MIC Sessions. Many Old hands on the Brisbane poetry scene like to workshop their poems here but many new poets and first time readers have got their start here also. There’s two sessions so bring a couple of your favourite odes or a piece that you admire by someone else.

Tea, coffee and a variety of tasty refreshments will be served free of charge. However; Please note that we encourage the community minded to bring a plate or a bottle of something cool to contribute to the feast. And I must say we’ve had some pretty fine spreads this year, well worth the price of admission!
