IVAN RADIX read at the KURILPA POETS, Sunday, SEPT 29th
The Kurilpa Poets September show was a jovial affair, with a good mix of the old crew and some new faces in attendance. All very casual-we didn’t even put the curtain up!
First timers Regan, Michelle and Helen all impressed the crowd with their verse and Christine (regular attendee/first time reader) after much pressure, finally brought in her Polar Bear poem to the amusement of all.
Our tireless Kitchen Organiser Linda Loop emerged to read an enchanting old folk tale about Devon “Pixskies”. Mystery Musician of the month, the Man with the Ochre Arm, Mr Bob Mud accompanyed her with suitably otherworldly tones.
Bob also provided an appropriately eerie and eldritch musical backdrop to the Reverend Hellfire’s rendition of Charles Baudelaire’s shaggy dog story, “The Three Demons“. Indeed Bob’s eclectix mix of keyboards and various woodwind type instruments set a suitably shamanic vibe for the whole afternoon. We thank you Bob.
Shrugging off recent health problems, Feature Poet Ivan Radix growled and rumbled his way through an intense and energetic set of poems.
His words and performance definitely transported you to a different place/ a different point of view that afternoon. Pacing the stage with a measured tread, his poems are at once both personal and political, local and universal. The Kurilpa Poets thanks Ivan for delivering this memorable performance.
Also recovering from his health difficulties, we were pleased to see Kurilpa veteran, Mr Vij Chandra return to walk amongst us once more. Wired for sound with his own personal PA set-up, Vij shared some of his recent poems that he’s been writting during his convalescence.
The Usual Suspects were all in attendance and made their presence felt at the Mic- Cameron,Bill, Judith, Paul, The Loaded Dog, Tony, the other Tony, et. al., made worthy contributions to the day. Even our trusty official photographer took his turn at the Mic. JohnTreason we’re looking at you..
A final thought; Is this a trend? The increasing number of people reading from notebooks/tablets/iphones et al.at the Open Mic? We wonder..
